Optical instrument: This is a single or double tubed device with internal optics that allow significant magnification of an object or slide placed in the viewing support site. It ranges from simple hand held devices used in the field to magnificent large devices with substantial capacity. The extreme is the electron microscope which uses electrons rather than light to magnify much tinier things.
