Kinda: The eight glasses a day rule is not truly a myth, it just has no true scientific basis. It hasn't really been studied extensively. As for maintaining hydration, the quick and easy way, though occasionally not quite accurate, is to watch the color of urine you produce. The clearer and more colorless, the better hydration you've achieved. Not 100% but requires no math or tools.

Somewhat: If you had no other source of fluid intake this would be a reasonable goal. However, people consume fluid bearing foods every day.Some, like applesauce or pears are 95% water.Vegatables run about 60%. When you take in fluid value in your regular diet, adding 8 glasses/d is just going to make you pee more.It is not needed for most. Humans who follow their well designed thirst mechanism will be fine
