Heroin: Heroin is an illicit drug that is an opiate. Heroin is actually a trade name as it was created by Bayer (aspirin) pharmaceuticals and in the early 1900's was legal in the us. Morphine and Codeine are natually found in the opium poppy plant but are also prescription meds as well. Thebaine is another natural opiate, many prescription opiates are created from it.

All are Rx: Opiates are medications that are chemically related to opium. The more common term is "narcotics". This includes meds such as morphine, demerol, (meperidine hydrochloride) vicodin, oxycontin, dilaudid, and norco. All are controlled substances in the U.S., which means they are available by prescription only. No over-the-counter drug is an opiate.
