How effective are cpaps at treating obstructive sleep apnea?

12 doctors weighed in across 5 answers

Very: As i tell my patients... CPAP is 100% effective 100% of the time you are using it. Unfortunatley compliance is about 50%. Bottom line... If you are using it and keep it on... It's effective. If you don't tolerate it... You need other treatment.

Very: Cpap's are very effective if used. The gold standard of treatment. Studies show only a 30-50% compliance after a year. This is one of the reasons the american academy of sleep medicine in 2006 said that for mild to moderate sleep apnea an oral appliance can be the first line of treatment. Compliance is 75-95% after one year.

Very: CPAP is the gold standard for treating osa. It works if you are able to tolerate it, are willing to wear it, and are willing to follow up with your sleep doc to make pressure adjustments as needed. Most people do well with cpap. If you don't tolerate it, consider oral appliance therapy, weight reduction if needed, surgery or provent therapy.

Very much so.: The standard treatment for OSA is CPAP or BiPAP use at night. The positive pressure keeps the airway open as you descend into deeper stages of sleep.
