Good question!: Sighing is a spontaneous deep inhalation and exhalation. We think that it helps to increase blood oxygen levels and inflate the lung to capacity. Sighing can be associated with certain moods and does not appear to be serious. All in all it is probably a helpful maneuveur for your lung health!

Reflex: Sighing is usually an involuntary reflex in which your brain is telling your diaphragm and other chest wall muscles to expand your lungs fully in order to open up the air sacs in your lungs. Someone once estimated that we sigh every 20 minutes. Yawning is a similar reflex.
