How does being obese affect cholesterol levels?

It may not: Surprisingly, cholesterol levels do not correlate with bodyweight. Much of what affects cholesterol levels is genetics.

Obese & cholesterol: It is variable. Obesity certainly increases your chances of developing high cholesterol. On the other hand, there are also genetic causes as well because there are obese people with low cholesterol and non-obese people with high cholesterol (like myself). That said, reducing ones obesity, even if it doesn't lower their cholesterol, will have countless other benefits to their health.
