Cataract Surgery: We are all born with a natural crystalline lens in each of our eyes which, like a lens in a camera, helps focus light. As we age and as a result of certain diseases (like diabetes), our lenses may opacify, blocking light entry. In cataract surgery, the lens is broken up with an ultrasonic probe and removed with an aspiration device. Then, a synthetic lens made of clear acrylic or silicon is placed in the position of the original lens, replacing it. The result is a new, clear lens to focus light in place of the old, opacified one.

Remove lens: The lens (behind iris) is usually clear & is like a pillow in a pillow case. When cloudy/white & affecting vision, surgery recommended. Goal is to remove top part of pillow case (anterior capsule), remove pillow (cataract), keep back pillow case intact (posterior capsule), place IOL; thru sm wound. Advances in cataract surgery (ie Femtosecond laser surgery) help! More info: eyedoc2020.blogspot.com
