A member asked:

What causes a fever? bacteria or virus? i know its a germ that causes sickness but what causes a fever, bacteria or virus?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Both: Bacterial and viral infections can cause fevers, in fact they are hallmark symptoms. Viral fevers tend to be lower grade as a rule, and bacterial higher. It is one way the body fights back, by basically "cooking" the pathogen in an attempt to kill it off. The mechanisms are too lengthy to describe here, but the answer is both.
