Many causes: Requires an evaluation to determine why. Need to check for thyroid problems, fibroids, ovarian cysts, polyps, and other hormonal imbalances (pcos, etc). If a patient is very overweight it can also disrupt normal ovulatory hormonal changes and cause overthickening of the uterine lining that can cause heavy, frequent, irregular bleeding. Precancerous changes of the lining need to be ruled out also.
