See below: The appendix probably functions as an immune organ similar to your tonsils. If it becomes infected (appendicitis) it should be surgically removed as this can lead to peritonitis, perforation and sepsis..

Not much: Some lymph cells and minimal known function. Once inflamed appendicitis, it may rupture or abscess so it is removed, and most folks do quite well without.
