NO: Hiccups suggest some diaphragmatic irritation and resolve spontaneously in normal individuals. Lots of home remedies.
If you have a preexisting metabolic disorder then you may need medical advice.

Why do hiccups occur ?

It's Normal: Most babies get hiccups frequently in the first 2-3 months, especially after eating. They usually bother the parents much more than the child, and no treatment is required. However, if you feel your baby is uncomfortable, and you can get him to latch on to the breast or bottle, a few more swallows of milk usually helps them resolve.

A 46-year-old member asked:
If someone often gets the hiccups, is it reason for concern?

Dr. Michael Amsteranswered

Generally no: For the most part, hiccups are a mild diaphragmatic spasm, and can happen after eating, sometimes with spicy foods, or other unknown reasons. Some can get them with stress. If they are short lived, and not causing debillitation, they are ok. If they are prolonged or come with other odd symptoms, they can be a sign of further issues.

Diaphragm : Irritation of the diaphragm causes hiccups. Usually due to swallowed air, but it can be a sign of a more serious problem and should be seen if it persists.

The diaphragm is a muscle between the chest and the belly. Not the device used for birth control purposes!

Hiccup cure!: My hiccup cure is one of the two things i hope to be remembered for when i've left this world. You know how hiccups surprise you? Slow your breathing down enough to surprise the hiccup, by getting in front of it. It will never come.
