Asleep: Usually these procedures are done under some sort of sedation. This may be a full general anesthesia or deep sedation. The urologist will also use local anesthesia to the area after you are asleep.

Choice: There are many choices of anesthesia. If i were doing your anesthesia, i'd do a "deep mac" where you would be completely asleep but breathing on your own. I'd ask the surgeon to also provide a local anesthetic block to numb the area of pain and this would help with postoperative pain control. Talk to your anesthesiologist before the case and good luck.

Sedation: In majority of places adult circumsicion will be done under sedation with surgeon using local anesthetic. It is also can be done under general anesthesia. In both cases you will be asleep. It can be done under local, but most patients prefer sedation during the procedure.
