Are there learning disabilities associated with mild cerebral palsy?

5 doctors weighed in across 3 answers

In some cases: The types of events that can lead to motor disturbances in CP may also effect parts of the brain involved in reasoning, speach, math, etc. Consder rain falling on a corn patch like blood flow to brain cells. If not enough rain comes the corn doesn't grow = not enough blood flow and the nerves don't grow. Vision problems & seizures are also associated with CP in any if its many forms.

Usually yes: Most children with cerebral palsy will have some degree of learning disability. However, it is difficult to predict from imaging or other examinations. It is best too be concerned and to offer special assistance in school. However, goals should include mainstreaming and allowing normal progress as they learn to adapt. Better to assume problems and then to be proven wrong.

None specific: Individuals with cerebral palsy may exhibit any number of learning disabilities due to the brain injury that caused the motor handicap. However, there is no specific LD. The effects of brain injury are individual. A child with CP should have a formal neuropsychological assessment when they are old enough to be tested.
