Iron deficit?: If ferritin is low means that the "warehouse" or reserve of iron in the body is low. If the iron binding capacity (tibc)is high means that the body is absorbing too much iron because it is low in iron. Low serum iron test by itself does not mean anemia or low iron. There is an iron deficiency anemia when the hemoglobin is below normal, the MCV and MCHC are low:/microchromic microcytic anemia.

Causes of iron loss?: Iron deficit often suggests bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract. Some causes are bleeding from hemorroids, or from diverticulosis, or from colon cancer or from peptic ulcer disease of the duodenum or stomach. In females bleeding may come from the uterus ( fibroids, uterine cancer). Malnutrition, malabsorption secondary to other conditions also cause iron deficiency.
