Yes: Iron deficiency will make you feel run down well before you become anemic. Iron's also essential to your cells' doing their metabolism. Many physician's don't realize this. You may want to look at where you might be losing blood and/or your diet -- are you getting enough for your needs?

Yes: Certain beers in the tropics caused iron load. So even in patients that did not have hemochromatosis did not develop iron overload. Also, patients with history of multiple blood transfusions can also develop iron overload. There was a famous bantu beer. Most patients cannnot get iron overload unless they have the genes.

Yes: Iron overload damages the liver, heart, and other organs; and it causes fatigue, weakness, joint pains, abdominal pain, etc... Treatment is by blood-letting (taking blood out of the person) and/or chelation (using chemicals to bind up the iron and remove it from the body).

Ask your doctor: Depends upon: 1) how elective is the surgery, 2) the degree of anemia 3) are you bleeding - and will the surgery correct the bleeding, 4) your overall health, 5) the nature and complexity of the surgery, 6) the likelihood that delaying surgery will increase your blood count.
