A 44-year-old member asked:

What does it mean when my iron saturation levels are low?

Maybe iron deficient: Low iron saturation could indicate an overall iron deficiency, but there are other blood tests that need to be done to determine this. Most common causes for iron deficiency are poor absorption from the diet and blood loss. If left untreated, low iron can lead to anemia.

See below: Agree with Dr. B. Low blood iron generally means iron deficiency and you should see your doctor to ascertain the cause and treat the cause as well as the deficiency. All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests.

What does a low iron saturation level in the blood mean?

Room for iron!: Most of the body's iron is bound to that red stuff in our red blood cells, hemoglobin. The rest is bound to proteins, like the blood protein transferrin. If there are still more possible binding sites for iron on transferrin, then the iron saturation is low. This can mean that the body's storage iron is running low. It can be seen before full iron deficiency anemia develops.

Are you deficient?: It warns of possible iron deficiency even before you become anemic. Your physician knows what to do to evaluate possible causes. If you are a non-meat-eater or have heavy monthly loss, you may have a supplement recommended for you, or a search for a source of bleeding may be in order.

Balanced protein : Low iron saturation means the body's protein is not combining with iron well. Take adequate protein from fish, poultry and eggs. Iron is better absorbed with vitamin c.

Iron level 11, what does this mean?

Thanks for asking!: Here we need to first clarify the following: serum iron level is usually presented in 2 types of units: either as mcg/dl (normal: 70-175 in men; 50-150 in women) or mcmol/l (normal: 12.5-31.3 in men; 8.9-26.8 in women). If serum iron level is abnormal, other iron panel parameters (ferritin, total iron binding capacity, transferrin saturation) and hemoglobin level should be evaluated.
A 33-year-old member asked:

How do you know if your iron level is too low?

Blood work: Need cbc, ferritin, transferin and serum iron. These will be off in varying degrees to make diagnosis. More common in women of reproductive yrs because of menses.
