Yes?: Not an easy answer, many people drink to feel better however it will usually only make these feeling worse, at best it numbs the feeling such as depression but really only makes it worse. Granted you may feel more depressed when you stop, but really you are not numb anymore and just feeling, your need to talk to someone like a doctor or counselor to help figure out your next step without alcohol.

Danger: not too fast: Abrupt withdrawal from alcohol can be not only anxiety-provoking but dangerous. Some will experience dt's (seriously altered thinking and possibly hallucinations) and others seizures. The depression could herald one of these. Detoxification with benzodiazipenes either in an outpatient - but better in an inpatient setting would be safer. It would also allow coordination of formal counseling/rehab.
