Good question.: Aa per se is not asking you to be religious; it is asking you to admit that you are powerless to stop drinking by yourself, and that there is a higher power that can help. What (if anything) you call that higher power is up to you - but that symbolic surrender appears to be a key ingredient in the success of aa.
