Dentally speaking...: From a dental perspective, "filling" is an umbrella term used to describe putting material into or onto a tooth. This may be due to a cavity (decay), fracture/crack, excessive wear, or for cosmetic purposes. The 2 main types of materials used now for fillings are amalgam (metal), and composite resins (tooth colored). Other materials can be used as well, including gold and porcelain.
