Ovum: Ovum is one proper name for the female gamete, also called oocyte, and (most commonly) 'egg.' ova (plural) exist in the ovaries of females, and are released in the reproductive years during ovulation. Most ova are lost not through ovulation, but some believe through a process called apoptosis.
