A 36-year-old member asked:

are there any long-term consequences to having a tympanostomy tube put in?

Limited: Tube placemnt (myringotomy and tympanostomy tube placement) is a very common procedure with very low risks. The only real "problem" that could develop is that when the tube comes out, the hole that it is in.. Does not close. You would then have a hole in the ear drum (perforation). This can easily be repaired. Overall, very safe and effective procedure - and simple.

No: There are really no serious complications with placeme NT of uncomplicated pe tubes. Mild discomfort post op.

Yes and No: They can clog with persistant drainage after the procedure or if there is an infection after placement. This can be treated with antibiotic drops - sometimes they need to be suctioned in the clinic under the microscope.

Yes, in length: In general, the longer the tube used, the longer they will stay in before naturally working themselves out, and the longer the child benefits from them.

None of those: If i was terminal; that is cancer, stroke, heart attack and it was unlikely i would retain quality of life, i would want no IV antibiotics, IV fluids, tube feedings, ventillatory support, etc.

See below: Go to er for bladder scan which can tell bladder volume. If this has happened before suggest urology consult to make sure no prostate problem, neurogenic bladder, etc. Next time tubes placed have it done in office using local anesthetic.
