Is there an age when learning disorders typically present themselves?

When skills needed: The educational system gradually places more work requirements as kids age. Until kids need to show competance in areas such as reading or math the child with a selective learning disability may not show any signs. The early school years are heavy on social skills and cooperation & kids with good auditory & visual memory may compensate for weaknesses in other areas for a while but they will emerge.

School years: Learning disabilities are usually recognized when children enter a school environment. Formal testing can identify difficulties in various learning skills and/or a discrepance between exposure to learning and the ability to assimilate the data and remember and use it.

Early risk factors : A preschooler who has a language delay, even one improved with therapy, should be monitored for the ability to make rhymes and to learn letter-sound associations, indicating " phonological awareness, " the basis for learning to read. A child with early fine motor delays is at risk for handwriting problems and, possibly, difficulty with math.Diagnoses of " ld" are often not made till 3rd grade.

Early and late: As others have responded, these are usually evident in early school years, though since limited skills are tested in early grades and tests less reliable - sometimes LD is not commonly diagnosed until 2nd or 3rd grade. School and kids are moving objects, so very bright kids who power through some tasks may not meet the criteria of a large enough difference until middle school or late high school.
