Depends: If the selective mutism is due to a social phobia or agoraphobia, then there are some possible treatments that may help. Anxiolytics can reduce these symptoms.

Unclear: Selective mutism is a specific type of anxiety, and treatments for anxiety such as antidepressants sometimes seem to help. However, as is true with nearly all types of anxiety, progress is better and longer lasting if medication is linked to an intervention that gets the person to begin facing the fearing in a way gradual enough to foster success.
