Is it okay for someone with a mitral valve prolapse to have children?

Yes: Mitral prolapse is a "normal" abnormality of the mitral valve seen in approximately 10% of the population. It usually does not cause any major heart problem but may be associated with chest pain and palpitations. There is no problem bearing children with usual mitral valve prolapse. Rarely a severe leak of the valve leads to surgical repair/replacement and could impact child bearing.

Typically yes: The majority of people with mitral valve prolapse have no significant mitral valve regurge. There should be no contraindication for pregnancy in this subset of patients. It all boils down to how healthy the heart and patients are.
