See below: Hypertension or high blood pressure is a major cause of stroke. It is also a major risk factor for development of coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure. Usually the condition causes no symptoms until far advanced. Hypertension can be controlled with medications. It is very important that patients take their medications consistently and have their pressure checked to assure control.

Many things: Consistent elevated blood pressures above 140 or 90 mmhg can lead to blood vessel damage, atherosclerosis and blockages. Over time, high blood pressure can cause heart attacks, angina, strokes, heart failure (CHF) and kidney failure. Diet (weight loss and low salt), less alcohol, and more exercise can reduce bp. Drug treatment is safe and effective, though some people need more than one drug.
