Pretty involved: Hello wavyavy -- heart bypass is an open heart surgery -- so you will be pretty involved with the whole process -- most likely you will need to stay in the hospital for about a week and a recovery time up to 3 months -- this is not an optional type of procedure -- but it is done to hopefully prolong your life -.

Big procedure: The classic operation is started with a breast bone incision and placing the patient on the heart lung machine so the heart can be stopped safely. New vessels (pipe) are sewn in to go around the blockages. This "pipe" can be vein from leg or arteries from arm or chest wall. After bypasses done the sternum is closed with wires. Hospital time can be from 3-10 days and total recovery 3 mo.
