It Depends: Check with your surgeon. The exact recommendation depends upon what type of surgery you had, how quickly you healed, your type of transportation, and your travel plans. Ask your doctor how soon you can travel in a car with seatbelts, how soon and how long you can fly in an airplane, and what activity level is recommended for you. With this information you should be able to make travel plans.

Soon: By car in a week- to get home! by plane a few weeks is common but it depends on the operation done, the general status of the patient. We usually see our discharged patients in 7-10 days and advise. We tend to see folks again at 6weeks and get them into rehab, driving etc.
