Variable: The appropriate amount of exercise for a patient with congestive heart failure is highly variable. Some patients will be able to do regular treadmill exercise and other patients can barely walk across the room. An appropriate exercise prescription can be reached after a discussion with a cardiologist who is familiar with the case

CHF exercise: We don't prescribe exercise for CHF patients until the CHF is controlled. When we feel control is reached, the patient is started on a low level exercise program tailored to their specific situation. We progress slowly with increases in the work load only very gradually. The patient will feel 'too much' by the symptoms provoked. We try to not get to the point where the patient feels symptoms.
