During : During an MRI tattoos (permanent makeup) can cause swelling or burning in the affected areas. This is very rare. The pigments of tattoos are fairly unregulated and some contain metal components which are susceptible to the strong magnetic waves produced during the imaging study. Due to the presence of these metals a tattoo can compromise the quality of the MRI image in the area being studied. In your example, this would involve the regions around the eye.
