6 weeks: Light exercise such as wallking can usually be done as soon as you feel like it. However, heavy exercise, weight lifting, endurance training, situps etc. Should wait until your body recovers and you return to a normal nonpregnant vascular status.

Immediately: I have my patients up walking within hours of a cesarean. We do limit lifting to less than 15 pounds for the first 4 weeks - after that i tell my patients to decrease their activity if they feel pulling, tugging, pressure, or pain in the area of the scar. It takes 4 weeks to get half the strength back in the tissure we operate on, and it takes 6 months for full strength in that tissue.

6 weeks.: All pelvic sexual activity should be suspended until your 6 week visit with your obstetrician for a thorough physical examination and pap smear. Anal sex can cause injury and/or serious (even life threatening) infection if it takes place too soon after a delivery. You should both focus on your newborn at this time and refrain from all pelvic sexual activity!

4 to 6 weeks: Many ob-gyn doctors recommend waiting 4-6 weeks to allow proper healing of a c-section incision before going swimming. If a woman "must" go swimming sooner, she should realize that at 2-3 weeks, her wound may look healed but may not be able to withstand repeated stretching or being scraped up along a pool's edge.
