Yes, : Yes, you can have retainers to hold your teeth in the state they are in now. That is what retainers do. If you feel that your original orthodontist did damage to your teeth you should contact your local dental society. Many dental societies have a system of peer review where patients with complaints can often get a refund of all or part of the fees paid and the damage done to their teeth repaired.

The : The simple answer is yes. Taking brackets off and wearing a retainer to hold them in place, a holding pattern of sorts, is normal and reasonable. You may find that where you are at is satisfactory and doing braces again, at the stated cost of $5000, is no longer of interest.

Braces/retainers: Treatment time is based on numerous factors, the most important being the training/skill/experience of the operator and the cooperation of the patient. Discontinuing treatment before optimum goals have been reached may result on a whole host of occlusal problems, with or without retainers. Retainers will help stabilize treatment result, but efficacy questionable if treatment discontinued early.
