You : You can check your sugar with a blood glucose meter using a never used lancet and lancing device. You should have a sugar below 100 fasting, before eating or drinking anything in the morning. If you are above 120 you are likely to have diabetes. Meters are not as accurate as blood drawn and tested in laboratory. Some health fairs will test for free.

Pharmacy: Check at local pharmacy. Accucheck will cost $30 to $50 initial purchase, but ask in your area pharmacy may know where to get one less expensive. Testing strips less than a dollar. I have many friends with home monitors. Ask them if you could check your sugar.

There : There is no perfect testing without blood work from a laboratory but you can test your sugar with a blood glucose meter using a new never used lancet and lancing device and new (not expired) test strip. You would test before eating any food or any drink in the morning. If your sugar is above 100 that is not normal. If you are above 120 diabetes is likely. Blood glucose meters are not as accurate as blood tested in the labdrawn from a vein in your arm . Some health fairs do testing of sugar at no charge. Take care.
