Modern : Modern medicine has not developed a treatment for damaged retinal tissue. In your post you point out that you lost peripheral vision with the initial event. If this has been stable, i would say there is not a lot that can be done. If there has been progressive loss, perhaps there is much that can be done to restore the vision to the level when you were 20. (you may have a cataract, there may be prgression of scaring....) your post points out the importance of regular eye exams in patients with one eye that is weaker. Not only is it important to follow the weaker eye, but keeping close tabs on the unimpacted eye is critical. At 53, you have many years before you. Please go get evaluated by your local eye doctor. Bringing any old records would help.

Get checked: Although there is little chance that the old damage could be repaired even with current technology, it is important to make sure that there is nothing else wrong. A new problem such as a redetachment or even glaucoma can lead to further loss of vision. So, please see an eye doctor.
