There : There are many reasons for weight gain in both children and adults. Tests for the thyroid are simple to rule out hypothyroidism include free T4 and tsh. If she is not short for her age she does not likely have something called cushings syndrome which may be caused by a pituitary condition and which causes weight gain from eating a lot. I would suggest she visit with an endocrinologist and ideally a pediatric endocrinologist to check her out. The absence of a family history of weight problems does raise concern.

Your : Your diaghter will need a pediatric endocrine and pulmonolgy specialist, the latter to rule out obstructive sleep apnea. Osa in children has shown in studies to increase ghrelin, a gut hormone that can make the child constantly hungry (hyperphagia). It does sound that your daughter's weight is peculiar, particularly with her rapid weight gain as a toddler. Did she have difficutly gaining weight as an infant ? Any GI reflex disease during her first year of life ? If so, she may have prader-willi syndrome, a genetic disorder that can lead to significant weight gain during toddler and preschool years following an initial period of normal/underweight stage. A genetic test is available (called methylation test, ~ detects 90% of all cases). Good luck. Cayce t.
