Any escalating habit that limits one's ability to be & do their best, consumes their energy, time, emotions & destroys relationships can be considered an addiction, which currently is included in the category 'disease'. A combination of genetic, familial, environmental, & personal factors can lead to the change of a habit into an addiction.
