You : You very likely have obstructive sleep apnea and that explains your excessive sleepiness. This condition is serious and is associated with increased risk of stroke and diabetes. Underactive thyroid makes it worse. Yes, you should get your thyroid tested: a blood tests for TSH is the minimum test you should get. Often some offices have arrangements with labs so they can offer you testing at a reduced charge. See the link below for more information on thyroid.

I : I agree with dr.Weiss that you likely have obstructive sleep apnea resulting from excess adipose/fat cells in the neck area. I also agree with the statement that your thyroid functions get checks soon (our lab charges less than fifity dollars for total T4 and TSH for out of pocket patients). If you indeed have hypothyroidism then the benefits of treating will far exceed not treating, furthermore, the cost of a 30 day supply of levothyroxine (the medicine used to treat people with hypothyroidism) is 4$ at most retail pharmacies under the 4 dollar program. Having a family history of hashimoto's disease, hair loss and skin dryness along with enlarged thyroid gland are all consistent with clinical hypothyroidism. Good luck. Cayce t.
