Yes, : Yes, one person has to carry the hpv virus. That person could have carried it for years without knowing that they had it. Then it is transmitted through mucosal membrane contact.

Not spontaneous: HPV is one of the most common STD's.It has the ability to infect you, remain unnoticed for years, clear it's initial infection but return and infect your future partners indefinately. It does not just appear out of thin air.It is acquired from an infected source. That contact may have been a decade in the past.
