A member asked:

At what age can a child stop seeing a pediatric dentist? our daughter just turned twelve, and we're wondering what is the appropriate age to switch over to a normal family dentist?

I : I saw my pediatric dentist until the age of 19. He provided excellent care - he also always provided a walkman with michael jackson's thriller player. My sister is a pediatric dentist. A pediatric dentist is able to care for permanent teeth and "baby" teeth. They also often get referrals to help with cases or extreme decay or when behavioral challenges require increased amounts of anesthesia or even hospital visits. If it is a matter of convenience and you are looking to get the entire family over to your family dentist (who i assume you like a lot), i think this transition could happen at any age. Family dentists can care for the majority of children at any age.

Some : Some practices have a cut off age. In our pediatric dental practice we allow our patients to remain as long as they feel comfortable coming. Our decor is condusive to all age groups.

I : I think the answer is dependent on two factors: 1. The age that your family dentist is comfortable in treating and 2. The maturation level of the child. I have a family practice going on 40+ years. I have no problem with children 7 and up. If their older siblings see the family dentist, the child often wants to imitate the older children. If a child is immature, easily frightened, or is uncomfortable in more of an adult atmosphere, which you can feel immediately, they should stay with their pediatric dentist until they are comfortable making the transition. It depends on the general dentist's personality, whether he is good with children and has the patience to work with them and if the child is comfortable with him.

Maybe!: Every child is different. If you child is excited about going to the pediatric dentist i would not change. If you child is "feeling too old" then it may be time to switch up. There is a big difference in how pediatric offices are run and adult offices. It can be intimidating for a child to be put into an operatory all alone for a cleaning when they are used to being in open areas!

Often : Often it is a behavior issue. If they can sit still, they can see a family dentist. Age 12 is usually a great age to switch. If they love their pediatric dentist, though, there is no rush. Often at age 12 they want a more adult office and not one with looney toons on the walls....

Joint decision: Let your child and her pedodontist talk this over with each other. They will jointly arrive at the best decision for your child based on need, maturity, and your child's best interests. By the way, has your child been screened by an orthodontist? First ortho ck-up age 7.
