You : You may have a condition called phlebitis--where the vein gets inflamed after injecting medications. However, it might be an infection which can be quite serious. I would recommend going to the emergency room right away to have it checked. I have seen some very serious infections and treatment should not be delayed. If there is no infection, there may be a clot in the vessel. A duplex ultrasound can look for a deep clot, but those are relatively rare. Clots in superficial vessels respond to warm compresses, anti-inflammatories, rest, elevation, and time.

I : I agree you can have phlebitis as well as cellulitis, and ascending lymphangitis. All three conditions merit medical evaluation.
