Severity/duration: Baby blues are in the first 2 weeks and go away quickly. Normally the woman cries easily but can still function. With postpartum depression, the sadness lasts longer and interferes with the mother's ability to bond, take care of herself or her baby. Medication or therapy are needed. With psychosis, the mother actually has hallucinations and a poor grasp of reality. Hospitalization is needed.

Ok: Baby blues is some moodiness related to the hormonal shifts in the peripartum period. This needs to be distinguished from post partum depression which is more serious and intense sadness, at times accompanied by suicidal thinking, or even psychotic sx, (seeing things or hearing things) If you are concerned it is time for a call and visit to your dr.
