There : There are a number of structures that can be cut in this area, including the skin, extensor tendon, lateral bands, saggital bands, lumbrical tendon, interosseous tendon, flexor tendon, and collateral ligaments, as well as the digital nerves. A hand surgeon can evaluate each of these structures to determine if there is a functional injury. Nerve lacerations are often best repaired soon after an injury--usually within 1-2 weeks. They can be repaired later, but then are more likely to require something to bridge the gap, such as a synthetic nerve tube. Tendon lacerations are also best repaired quickly. While infections can occur, usually you would have increasing pain, redness, and drainage.

Some : Some cuts heal with reaction to the tissue but an infection can be present. Some joints swell after they are cut into but if the joint has been cut you need to concern yourself with residual bacteria, a tendon injury or more so get evaluated.
