Symptoms : Symptoms of numbness of the entire body from the neck down can have many causes. Of these many causes, a process involving part of the spinal cord in the neck would be the most concerning. Spinal cord problems could include syringomyelia or transverse myelitis, which can sometimes cause sensory problems without weakness. Numbness from the neck down can also be caused by psychogenic (also known as somatoform, or "stress induced") problems, which can often be most challenging for the physician and patient to resolve. Psychogenic numbness can increase the chance of diagnosing something that is not actually there (leading to unnecessary and potentially dangerous tests and treatments) or lead to missing a diagnosis of an organic problem (potentially delaying appropriate treatment). A stroke in the brain would probably not cause symptoms of isolated numbness of the entire body from the neck down. Problems involving the spinal cord in the neck can be seen using an MRI of the cervical spine, usually done with and without gadolinium contrast.
