Office visit: The IUD is placed in a small plastic tube. The lip of the birth canal(cervix) is held steady with an instrument, and the plastic tube is inserted through the canal into the uterus. The IUD is then gently pushed out of the tube; the tube is removed and the strings on the IUD are shortened. Depending on age, and number of children, a local anesthetic to the cervix may be used.

A "springy" job: The copper 7 IUD is made of a flexible plastic that can go into an insertion device and will regain its shape when properly placed. The copper "T" IUD has two small springs that also bend to fit into the device and "spring" back to a "T" shape when inside the uterus and the insertion device is removed.
