A 59-year-old female asked:

swelling after thyroid surgery 3 days ago, the left lobe (a 4 cm nodule was on it) and the isthmus ? was removed. the whole area (including right under my chin) is huge. is this normal?

This : This is excessive swelling and should be seen asap. Typically an expanding hematoma (collection of blood in the wound bed where the thyroid lobe was removed) also causes excessive pain. If that is happening, see your surgeon right away.
Dr. Cayce Jehaimi

Talk : Talk with your surgeon regarding this issue asap. Its very common to have minor swelling in the area where the surgery took place but it sounds like you may have a fairly large area of swelling that goes beyond what is expected (cellulitis, hematoma, etc). Give them a call and good luck. Cayce t. Jehaimi, M.D., faap pediatric endocrinology & diabetes the children's hospital of southwest florida fort myers, fl.

Biopsy when stable: The current studies suggest that there may be a cancer. The source could be the lung or thyroid. This could also be benign, but with the pe it will need further workup. After the pe is stabilized a biopsy is the only way to know.

Caution advised: In the years I have been practicing I have yet to see anyone with significant lasting improvement after radio frequency ablation which is used to cauterize the small nerves supplying sensation to the spine. Assess the risks versus benefits carefully before deciding.

Depends: During sexual activity there are many points when sperm containing sexual fluids can leak & contaminate fingers or end up at your vaginal opening apart from the main event. If none of this fluid had access to your vagina, you can't get pregnant from sex using an alternative site.
