A member asked:

Stained teeth from tea? i think i have very slightly stained teeth from drinking tea every day, and am wondering if those home whitening strips would be enough to fix this?

Portland, Great : Portland, great idea! tea is one of the greater staining foods, it seems so much more than coffee. But that is probably dependent on the type of tea. I recommend a cleaning first, a lot of that stain will be taken away with a professional cleaning. Then if you are not satisfied, some drug store white strips are effective enough in about half my patients desiring whiter teeth. If still not enough, then talk to your dentist about professional whitening. Hope that is helpful, michael i. Wollock, dmd, agd fellow dentistry at suburban square 610-649-0313.

There : There is only one way to find out... Go to your dentist and get a good initial cleaning, then purchase the strips and apply them to your teeth and watch the results. Many of my patients have done this and they have save themselves lots of money on bleaching, since any type of bleaching that i offer in the office is much more expensive than the strips. Best wishes, dr. Zev kaufman.

As : As previously stated by drs. Wollock and kaufman, your best move would be to visit your dentist for a professional cleaning to eliminate all stains and superficial impurities, i would recommend also to ask your dentist for a professional home care bleaching system, the difference between the over the counter bleaching and the one your dentist will deliver to you with custom made trays, is that the concentration of the active ingredient for whitening your teeth will be more efficient, and you will be able to control at home the degree of whitening you desire for a longer period of time. Good luck!, .

Professsional: Professional whitening at your dentist's office would be best; it also depends on what you consider successful in terms of whitening, everyone's expectations are different, it is best you ask your dentist to go over all options, including no-prep veneers or durathin/lumineer/feldspathic veneers if you're going to keep drinking tea. Best, most conservative generally is professional whitening.

Professional whiten: Do not waste your hard earned money on white strips. You need professional whitening which consists of a custom tray that would only fit your mouth and the ability of the dentist to use the correct percentage of bleach that can be custom prescribed.

Cleaning first: Whitening strips or Dental office whitening will not work on these stains. They must first be entirely removed by hygienist, then you are ready for whitening. Some teeth respond well to the strips, others not so much. Ask your Dentist which might be best for you. I often suggest that my patients try the strips (cheaper) to see if the teeth respond. If they desire more, then we will do it. Good Luck
