I : I would double check what your mom's diagnosis really is. If it really is just a lipoma, then most of the time this is not a major concern and can oftentimes be taken care of with a local anesthetic in a doctor's office. Lipomas can grow to be very large however, in which case the procedure would be more involved and likely done in an or with an anesthsiologist present. There are other conditions that sound similar such as a leiomyoma or a liposarcoma whose treatment can be very diffierent. With that in mind i will go ahead and answer your question, making some assumptions. I will assume that if your mom does have a simple lipoma and has been told she will need surgery that it must be somewhat larger. Lipomas are usually located in the fatty tissue that lies just underneath the skin, which makes getting to them fairly easy most of the time. Even the larger (10 - 15cm) lipomas can therefore usually be done as an outpatient operation, meaning your mom would come in, have her surgery, and then go home the same day. Recovery afterward depends on the location of the lipoma, but is usually pretty easy with most people resuming most of their routine day to day activities within a few days to a week. As to how to find a doctor, i would ask your primary care physician who they would recommend if you were the one with the lipoma and go from there.

This situation is generally reserved for lipomas that are deep to or interdigitating with muscle fibers as are more commonly seen in the back or flank, very large lipomas or those inside a body cavity (rare). The duration, cost and extent of the surgery will depend on all of these things.
