Hello. : Hello. I am not sure why you are short of breath. If you have been smoking for a long time and the quit or significantly cut down on use, that can lead to coughing up mucus and that can cause some shortness of breath. What is usually happening is that toxins in cigarettes paralyzed the motile hairs (cilia) in the respiratory system. Those cilia move bacteria, viruses, dead cells and debris out of your system. If the amount of toxins is reduced, the cilia may be motile again. This would provide a tempoary increase in pulmonary symptoms. If this is the case, stay very well hydrated, to help keep the mucus moist.

See a doctor: If you haven't done serious damage already (like chronic bronchitis and emphysema), things will improve within a few weeks to a few months. If more damage is done, recovery will be slower and will not be complete. But it won't get worse, which is very important. If you are out of condition, you can help yourself with a gradual aerobic exercise program, which will improve your sob and fitness.
