Just : Just came across your question, so you probably already went for your visit. Were you implying that your jaw was dislocated? Then the surgeon would be treating you differently that what you described as clicking and crackling. I would think the oral surgeon would be evaluating you for TMJ problems by measuring your range of motion, any pain, and possibly radiographic analysis of the joint itself. If you have TMJ symptoms he may recommend a night guard.

IF : If as you say your jaw is off track, and i assume that you are having difficulty closing it, and if that is the case then i would suspect that the surgeon may try to reduce the joint and may put you on muscle relaxants. I recommend a soft diet, avoid yawning if at all possible do not open your mouth wide and avoid talking on the phone on the side affected. Taking anti inflammatory drugs like advil (ibuprofen) is a good idea, but not for long, oh yes! make sure you are going to see a dentist who knows about TMJ problems. Dr neil mcleod dds denrtistry that lasts - quality that counts.

Disk Displacement: Most likely your TMJ disk is our of position. . If no other symptoms, requires no treatment. If popping getting louder, with pain, limited oral opening, locking, clench/grind teeth, see TMJ expert. Not necessarily an oral surgeon. If he is not a TMJ expert, he will likely refer to someone who can manage the problem.
