Sometimes : Sometimes back pain is so severe that breathing is painful, but this is unusual. The presence of pain with breathing is concerning for lung pain and i would recommend seeing your primary care doctor right away to rule out lung problem. Especially if it is associated with shortness of breath and/or chest pain. If no lung or heart problem is found then the pain could be from pulled back muscle or joint problem and your doctor may start you on anti-inflammatory medicine and physical therapy. Good luck!
