Babies : Babies are born with "soft spots" or fontanelles where the bone plates of the skull have not grown together. The fontanelles are made up of cartilage and membranes instead of bone - this enables their large heads to pass through the vagina more easily when they are born. In a 4 month old, there are 2 noticeable soft spots - one diamond shaped one at the top of the head and one small triangular shaped one in the back of the head. The larger one on the top will close at around 1 year of age and the smaller one at the back will close at 6 months. If you are feeling something different than this, contact your child's doctor and have them take a look. Head injuries and scalp swelling can cause a soft area, and needs to be evaluated. Good luck!
